I know things in the job market slow down over the holiday season, and many job seekers shut down their job search. Hiring managers are on vacation, budgets are exceeded or frozen, and there doesn’t seem to be much going on.
So, what should a job seeker do right now? There are actually a lot of different things that you can be doing right now to keep your job search active and make sure you are ready to strike when the opportunity arises.
- Do all the job hunting legwork. By this I mean do your research; do some of the time consuming busy work that is involved in finding a job. Research companies and compile a list of places you’d like to work. List out the pros and cons of your current (or last) position, and decide what’s most important to you in your next job. Try and find names of people who work at your targeted companies, and perhaps begin the networking process through LinkedIn or other social media.
- Tighten up that resume. Look back over the types of positions for which you are qualified, and make sure you have a version of your resume for each one of these positions. Put the skills and experiences that are more appropriate for that position toward the top of your resume, and highlight the most relevant accomplishments you made.
- Keep your networking active. Go to holiday parties! Get out there and meet people, and make sure you tell them all you are looking for a job. Go to the holiday get-togethers for technical user groups. All these social events give you an excuse to meet as many people as possible, and you never know when you’ll meet a hiring manager who has some openings coming in January.
- Thank the people who have helped you this year. If there are some people who have helped you in your job search this year, even if it hasn’t yet been successful, the holidays are a great time to say thank-you. Something as simple and inexpensive as a holiday card is a very nice touch, and it accomplishes a couple of things: 1. It lets the person know you appreciate their efforts. This, in turn, makes it much more likely they will continue trying to help. 2. It keeps your name at the forefront of their mind if they either have an opening for which they can hire, or if they hear about an open position.
- Review what worked and what didn’t. I know, if you didn’t find a job, it’s easy to say “Nothing worked” and move on. But I am sure that isn’t completely true. Look back over what you have done and list out the positive accomplishments and negative setbacks. This will help you hit the ground running in 2016 to repeat the things that went well and try and minimize the things that didn’t.
